If the volume of media discussion is any indication…

Wow! Lots of interesting Food & Nutrition related articles in the news this weekend!

Some of you might have already seen the NY Times Magazine special “Food & Drink” Issue. Two articles in there are particularly pertinent from a policy standpoint, and are also both about California:

  • Michael Pollen’s piece entitled “Vote for the Dinner Party” about CA’s Proposition 37 on GMO labeling that will be voted on come Nov 6th.
  • Mark Bittman’s piece “Everyone eats there” about the environmental price that comes with the industrial complex of our current food production system, and ways to work to alleviate it.

Also, in The Nation has two recent pieces that tie in well with topics we will be discussing in Period II. The first is about the FLOTUS’s Let’s Move! Campaign, and whether it has done anything or enough to get things moving in the right direction. The second might appeal more to those of you with more clinical interests, as it is about hospitals who’ve started partnering with local farmers.

Oh, and the saga of NYC ban on sales of sugar-sweetened soda of >16 oz. by Food Service Establishments continues…. There is now a class-action lawsuit against the NYC Board of Health. Keep your eyes peeled!!

Hope you will have a chance to review these over your Fall Break!
